Boshell's great strike puts holders into semi-finals

Guiseley 1 Halifax 0

Holders Guiseley booked their place in the semi-finals of the West Riding County Cup thanks to a stunning goal from Danny Boshell The midfieldman burst onto a through ball before blasting a ferocious 51st minute shot past Halifax goalkeeper Phil Senior.

It was a stunning strike and one that was worthy of winning any game.

The victory also gave the Lions some compensation for the 4-3 defeat the Shaymen inflicted on them when they visited Nether- moor for a Blue Square Bet North encounter earlier in the season.

But the win did come at a cost with top scorer Gavin Rothery suffering a broken toe in his first game back after a three-match suspension.

The Lions forced the pace in the first half with Mark Bower, Simon Ainge, Danny Forrest, Joe O’Neill and James Walshaw all going close.

Halifax were content to play on the break and their best effort produced a good save from Guiseley’s stand-in keeper Jacob Giles.

After Boshell broke the ice in the 51st minute, Guiseley created chances to add further goals.

Andy Holdsworth fired a shot against the inside of a post and Senior did well to save a Joe O’Neill shot.

As the pressure grew Danny Ellis had a header blocked on the line and striker Walshaw – who recently had a spell on loan at Halifax, twice went close.

Walshaw saw a header go narrowly over the bar before Senior produced a stunning save to keep out his shot which seemed destined for the top corner.

Guiseley will now be at home to old rivals Farsley in the semi-finals next month.

The final is due to be played at Valley Parade on Wednesday, April 11,
